| The
End of the Rainbow: PB finds a home
On a very cold, dreary night in October 1999, the dog control
officer made a grim discovery: four starving adult dogs and eight
puppies were found on an abandoned property. Two of the adult dogs
were chained to trees and unable to reach any kind of shelter. The
two other adults (mothers of the 8 puppies) were loose and
surviving by eating vegetables on nearby farmland. The dogs
were seized, brought to NCCR and subsequently placed in homes.
All of them, that is, except PB.
PB, an older Lab, weighed only 47 pounds when he
arrived. He was absolutely petrified of being left alone again. He became
panic-stricken and destructive when left alone, trying to get
out of any kennel he was in.
As
the months passed, PB gained 30 pounds and became more relaxed,
but any change in routine or being moved to another kennel
always brought back the panic. All of the volunteers loved PB and
worried that this older fellow would never find a home.
Two years passed and then it happened. We received an email from
Mary. She and her daughters saw PB and his story on the website
and wanted to meet him. It was love at first sight for PB and
the family decided right away that they wanted to take him home. Knowing
that change upset him, we decided on a series of weekend visits
until he was totally comfortable in a new setting. PB left us one
Saturday morning, never to return to NCCR. He quickly settled
into his new home and left all his anxieties behind. PB at last
found out that it is not gold that sits at the end of the rainbow,
it's love.
PB knew that after all this time, he finally had his own family
to love and care for him and that he needn't ever worry about being
abandoned again. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to this very special
family for their willingness to open their hearts and home to one
very deserving fellow.
