Why I Volunteer

Meg with her bestest pal Buddy.I started volunteering at the Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue in December 1998. I've always loved animals and have been a member of the Learn and Serve America program at Fredonia Central School since seventh grade. Learn and Serve America is a national organization that promotes service-learning. Students form committees through the club and get teacher support and funds for their activity. After volunteering at the canine rescue for a few weeks, I formed a committee at the high school. At first my committee had only two members. Today, ten students serve on the committee. Volunteering at the canine rescue has been an educational and rewarding experience.

Besides volunteering weekly at the canine rescue, the high school has done several projects. I have visited four elementary school classrooms giving a presentation about the canine rescue and ethical treatment of animals. This has not only raised awareness about animal abuse, but has also galvanized two elementary students and one parent—all three have been volunteering at the canine rescue since my presentation.

In December of 1999 and April of 2000, we put donation boxes in area stores. People were very generous and the dogs greatly appreciated the toys and treats.

I was selected to represent Fredonia High School at the 1999 Learn and Serve America conference in Kerhonkson, NY. Schools from all over New York State sent representatives to this three-day event. At the conference, I educated people about the homeless dogs by displaying information about the Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue. The conference was very informative and it was fun learning about the volunteer efforts of other students.

My work at the canine rescue has been both educational and enjoyable. I've bonded with many dogs and seen many move on to happy homes. I plan on volunteering at similar organizations for the rest of my life. end
