Faith + Inmates + Dogs = Opportunity

NCCR is very happy to have the opportunity to work with the FIDO program through the Anderson, Ind. Correctional Facility. FIDO (Faith + Inmates + Dogs = Opportunity) was established September 4, 2008.
It has been proven that working with animals can help humanize inmates who have been incarcerated for long periods of time. It teaches them responsibility, how to interact in a group using non-violent methods to solve problems and gives them the unconditional love of a pet – something many of these inmates have never known. This program can help inmate/handlers become productive members of society when they are released back into the community. In Indiana alone 16,000 inmates are released back into the communities every year. For the inmates serving life sentences, their mission in life may very well be to become being a champion for animals that society throws away.
Rex, a Shepherd mix, was our first FIDO dog and what a beauty he is. He has already joined his new family and doing extremely well. The inmates keep the dogs with them and teach them the basics. They are housetrained, crate trained and know the 5 basic commands and have been very well socialized. There is a tight bond that forms between the dog and their trainer and when the time comes for them to say good-bye it is an emotional experience for both. Some of these boys have never had anything in their lives that they have truly loved.
Abbey, our second FIDO dog has just arrived. She is a medium sized, playful Shepherd mix who is ready and waiting for a home. You can find more information about Abbey and if you are interested in adoption, you’ll find an application under her photo in the gallery.
This is a wonderful program and we will assist in finding homes for graduates of the FIDO program as space allows.
