Savvy & Querida arrived at NCCR on 11/20/23. They are female Portuguese Water Dogs, rescued when the breeder who owned them decided to retire and had no further use for them. Savvy is an approximately 4–5-year-old female weighing around 42 pounds, and Querida is a 4–5-month-old female who is still growing. Both girls are a little shy, and will need time and patience while they adjust to their new lives and learn how to live as well-loved pets instead of breeding dogs in a kennel. Dogs rescued from these sorts of situations tend to be a little slower to learn and generally need to be trained starting with the basics, including house training and learning how to walk on a leash. Portuguese Water Dogs tend to stay “puppyish” for longer than average, and as a working breed, they tend to have a lot of energy, so plenty of exercise and playtime is a must! They are low-shedding, but require routine brushing and grooming to keep their coats healthy.

If you think you might be interested in adopting, your first step should be to complete an  Adoption Application.  *After you have completed your application, you will get a confirmation that we have received your application. It takes a lot of time to process the applications, so we ask for your patience while we do so. If you see that the dog you were interested in has been adopted it means there were many applications for that dog and we did not get as far as processing your application before a home was found. We do adopt out of state, however we do not transport or ship dogs. Potential adopter must be able and willing to travel to the Rescue to meet the dog they are interested in.
